Length of esophagus is important in various resection surgeries as well as endoscopy.
The esophagus is anatomically defined as the distance between the cricoid cartilage and the gastric orifice.
It ranges in adults from 22–28 cm (24 ± 5 SD), with the last 3–6 cm located in the abdomen.
Clinical relevance:
• Orthotopic posterior mediastinum route = 30 cm
• Retrosternal route = 32 cm
• Subcutaneous route = 34 cm
Deviations: To the left in superior and lower posterior mediastinum.
